Ask a seasoned traveler where to stay in Paris and you’ll rarely hear the name of a palace hotel. You’ll hear an arrondissement. The city rewards those who choose a neighborhood first and a hotel second, because in Paris the address is the experience — the café you claim as your own, the market street you learn by heart, the walk home after dinner. The best boutique hotels in Paris understand this, which is why we’ve spent years placing them in front of American travelers and the advisors who guide them. We’ve represented the Experimental Group in the US since 2017, and its trio of Parisian hotels happens to be a near-perfect map of how to think about the city.
Here’s how we’d frame it.
South Pigalle (9th): Grand Pigalle Experimental
If you want the Paris of night owls, record shops, and neighborhood bistros, base yourself in South Pigalle — “SoPi” to locals. This is where the Experimental Group planted its first hotel, and it shows: Grand Pigalle Experimental is a four-star boutique hotel that grew out of the same creative team behind the Experimental Cocktail Club, so the wine bar and cocktail programme are as considered as the rooms. You’re roughly 550 metres from the Moulin Rouge and a short climb from Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur, but the real appeal is the everyday: this is a hotel that feels stitched into the 9th arrondissement rather than dropped on top of it.
Best for: first-time visitors who want energy and walkability, and returning travelers chasing the “real” Paris.
Grands Boulevards (2nd): Hotel des Grands Boulevards
Between the 2nd and 9th arrondissements, moments from the Opéra and within strolling distance of the Marais, Hotel des Grands Boulevards is a 50-room hôtel particulier that opened in 2018 and has only grown in stature since — it earned a MICHELIN Key in 2024, the guide’s distinction for the world’s most special stays. Behind a discreet façade you’ll find a leafy courtyard, a rooftop bar, and a brasserie, all wrapped in the kind of design-led, distinctly Parisian atmosphere that sits comfortably below the palace tier while quietly outperforming it on charm.
Best for: travelers who want a central, culturally rich base with a genuine sense of arrival.
Le Marais: Experimental Marais
The group’s newest Paris flagship, Experimental Marais, is a five-star property in the vibrant Haut Marais — its third and most ambitious Parisian address. The Marais is Paris at its most layered: medieval streets, galleries, independent boutiques, and some of the city’s best people-watching. A refined boutique hotel with a spa here gives you a calm retreat in the middle of all that texture.
Best for: design lovers and repeat visitors who want to live in the city’s most characterful quarter.
A note for travelers heading on to London
The Experimental Group’s instinct for neighborhood-led hospitality isn’t confined to Paris. The same team is behind The Henrietta in London’s Covent Garden — a natural pairing for clients combining the two cities on one itinerary, and a good example of how a single design sensibility can travel while still feeling local in each place.
Why neighborhood-first matters now
This isn’t only a matter of taste. The broader luxury market has shifted toward slower, more immersive, more local travel — away from ticking off landmarks and toward genuinely inhabiting a place. Independent and small-brand hotels are built for exactly that, because they carry the character of their streets in a way a large chain simply can’t manufacture. Choosing where to stay in Paris by neighborhood is the most reliable way to travel with that grain rather than against it.
Working with Hotel Labs
For travel advisors, a curated collection beats a sprawling directory when clients want confidence that a recommendation will land. We know these properties first-hand and can help match the right hotel to the right traveler — more on that on our For Advisors page.
For hoteliers, the lesson of the Experimental Group’s Paris run is that distinctive, well-positioned independent hotels can more than hold their own against the majors — provided they reach the right audience. That reach is our job; see For Hoteliers for how we approach the US market, or read more about us and how we’ve built our collection since 2007.
